Several years ago my childhood girlfriends and I gathered together to mark a special occasion. In thinking ahead about the celebration, I was inspired to use the occasion to honor our friendship and brought each friend a glass candle votive, each a different color with a different meaning. After opening the boxes, we gathered the candles together on a table and lit each one. Together they glowed in a beautiful circle.
We’ve been friends for more than 40 years. Our steadfast bond has helped us weather all kinds of life’s changes. We’ve gathered for meals too numerous to count as well as births and weddings, and we’ve stood together at hospital beds and gravesites. The shelter of our friendship has helped sustain us through difficulties. And, importantly, it has also given us the good fortune of celebrating together many joyous events as well as the more mundane happenings of everyday life. Together we’ve shared, laughed, and bonded; we’ve lasted.
A new tradition came from that night several years ago. Now, whenever a significant event or difficulty arises, someone will start a group text with the call, “Light your candles, girls.” One by one each texts back with words of support and a photo of her glowing candle, illuminating the darkness and sending light to a friend in need. Collectively, the candles encircle us and provide a symbol of support.
Do you have a tradition that keeps you connected with friends?

What a wonderful and supportive tradition.
My friends have “Moon call” group text. When you receive the text, you look at the moon and know that all are looking at a cool-looking moon together. It’s sweet!

The “moon call”—how very special. I was touched by the simply beauty of your tradition and how wonderful it is that you have this way of staying connected with your friends. Thank you for sharing this with us!
