- From National Geographic, “Giant Hands Cradle Vietnam’s New Golden Bridge” features the stunning Cau Vang (“gold bridge”) which, located nearly 4,600 feet above sea level, appears to be held by weathered, stone hands.
- Perspective:
“Most of us lead far more meaningful lives than we know. Often finding meaning is not about doing things differently; it is about seeing familiar things in new ways.”
—Rachel Naomi Remen - “Putting Off the Important Things? It’s Not for the Reasons You Think,” by Oliver Burkeman for The Guardian, is a relatable insight on gumption and what stands in the way.

Saved that Guardian article on Gumption. Excellent points and I love that they were able to label those behaviors/thought processes so accurately! Wow!

Erin, I agree and especially like Burkeman’s perspective on the “importance trap.” His example of reading is spot-on; I can totally relate to that! Plus, loved his use of “gumption,” a word I grew up with but rarely hear now.

The Guardian article spoke to me too. I always think I need to have the rest of my life in order before doing something creative or recreational. So I’ll do the dishes or laundry only to discover there’s no time left to sew or read or bike. At the end of the day I’d much rather say “I made this” instead of “the kitchen is clean.”

You said it so well! I often find myself in the same boat at the end of the day, realizing that what I didn’t get to are the things—and the people—that matter most to me. The article has motivated me to try and change that a bit. Yesterday I made sure to take time from my day to get a letter out in the mail that, for weeks, I had been intending to write.

A brilliant photo and a very thought-provoking quote! Thank you.

Glad you like the photo! The Portage Viaduct trestle bridge spanned the Genesee River Gorge in Letchworth State Park in western New York. I took the photo on a beautiful June afternoon in 2016 just after watching a train cross. The 142-year-old bridge was dismantled earlier this year and replaced with a new bridge able to accommodate current freight loads and speed. I feel lucky to have seen the old bridge!
